Bicycling Clothing Is Functional, Comfortable, And Fashionable
If bicycling clothing were simply a way to make a fashion statement it would probably appeal to only a fraction of the people that wear it routinely. It serves a very definite function and each item stands on it’s own merit.
The most important function is to protect the rider from shock and vibration, the elements, and the effects of chaffing and perspiration. AND, do all of this while allowing for the maximum in freedom of movement.
It's a pretty tall order but bicycle clothing does the job very well. Even if your taste runs towards the more conservative styles and colors (which is often the case with boomers and seniors) there are still a lot of choices, so don't diapair.
Bicycle shorts
Are padded in the seat to give added comfort. They have no seams where they would cause chaffing.
Bike jerseys
are designed for freedom of movement and to wick sweat away from your body. They have pockets in the back for energy bars etc.
Cycling tights
have all of the features that shorts do pluss the added length for cold weather rides.
Bicycle gloves
protect your hands from shock and vibration but still breathe to eliminate sweat.
Cycling jackets
are designed to seal in body heat and still breathe to prevent overheating. Most have zippered vents for added comfort.
Bicycle shoes
have very stiff soles, for delivering power efficiently, as well as cleats that lock into clipless pedals. So, power is delivered to the pedals on the up-stroke as well as the down-stroke.
Cycling vests
can keep you cool in the summer or warm in the winter.
